A Chain Checking tool is an absolutely key part of every cyclist's toolbox.

Checking your chain wear regularly with this simple and cost-effective tool can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds over the life of your bike.

When a chain wears, it will also wear out the chainrings and cassette sprockets on your bike.

If left to wear too much, a new chain won't mesh correctly with the old worn-out components, causing slipping and poor shifting. The only remedy for this is a whole new drivetrain.

Changing your chain before it wears out should allow you to preserve your other components, extending their lifespan by 2-3x or more.

Don't forget: it's absolutely crucial to maintain a clean and well-lubricated chain, especially if you are gravel riding or mountain biking. A dirty chain can need replacing in a fraction of the time it takes for a well-maintained chain to wear out.

For 7-10 speed bikes, it's usual to change the chain before 0.75% - so between 0.6 and 0.8 on the KMC tool.

For 11 speeds or more, it's usual to change at or before 0.5% - so between 04. and 0.6 on the tool.
